"Saturday, July 25, 1908 Handled paperwork. I came into possession of a pair of trousers belonging to an upper-class Swahili woman. I bought them in the duka (shop) in the village for 1 rupee 50. They are made of white fabric, which comes from Germany, and reach down to the ground. The feet are covered by a pleated trim, and above the ankle, a piece of darker fabric about two hand-widths wide is sewn in, decorated with colorful threads. Everything is machine-sewn by Indian tailors. Often, locals also sew with machines. These items are especially made in Muhesa. The fabric is provided by the D.O.A.G. (German East Africa Company). There are also complete outfit combinations, as I saw the evening before last at the "Weibsgoma" (women’s dance). Black fabrics are worn only by menstruating women. –" [translation]
