"Thursday, August 19, 1909. Mr. Laming gave me a dog collar of the Washambaa, which they use when they go hunting pigs with dogs. Such a collar carries a large hand-forged bell called gongongo. To make it, old metal items are used — old farming tools, hoes, or iron objects bought from Indian shops. These are hammered out, then a round piece is shaped and bent together. In the middle is a roughly pounded iron ball. The cord by which the bell is fastened to the dog’s neck is made from malamba, that is, the dry leaf sheaths that hang on the outside of banana stems. Additionally, the same gentleman gave me a tobacco pouch of the Washambaa. It is made from the hairless hide of a gazelle (pala). The skin is removed, cleaned, and stuffed with leaves, then dried. Later, it is softened by crumpling in the hands and made supple by rubbing it with oil from the kwenne (Telfairia pedata). (continued in Vol. 54) […](Continuation from Vol. 53) Such a pouch is open at one end, at the other is a strap made of ordinary bison leather. At one free end of the strap is a sliding loop with a brass spiral, which can be pulled over the open end of the pouch. In this way, the pouch is closed and can be slung over the shoulder using the strap." [translation]

See the file „Transfer of a colonial collection from the senior government councillor Professor Dr. Karl Braun in Stade to the City of Stade” („Überlassung einer Kolonialsammlung vom Oberregierungsrat Professor Dr. Karl Braun in Stade an die Stadt Stade") at the Lower Saxony State Archives Stade (Niedersächsischen Landesarchiv Standort Stade).

Thereafter, the collection from Karl Braun is transferred to the care of the Museum Society Stade (Museumsverein Stade e.V.).
